Recognition
U.S. News & World Report consistently names Cleveland Clinic one of the nation’s best hospitals in its annual "America’s Best Hospitals" survey. In 2007, the Clinic was ranked among America's Top Hospitals overall and our Heart Center was once again ranked best in the nation. Cleveland Clinic also was recognized as one of the top hospitals in all 17 specialties surveyed by the magazine.
In June, 2003, the American Nurses Credentialing Committee (ANC) – an arm of the American Nurses Association and the nation's largest nursing accrediting and credentialing organization – awarded Magnet status to Cleveland Clinic's nursing staff. To become a Magnet hospital, nursing services must pass a rigorous review administered by the ANCC. A hospital must successfully meet or exceed expectations in 14 categories of care and performance criteria.
Cleveland Clinic is the only hospital in the greater Cleveland area and the second hospital in Ohio to be recognized. Just one percent of the nation's more than 6,000 hospitals have earned the distinction of ANCC Magnet status.
Cleveland Clinic also has been named one of the nation’s best hospitals in the HCIA-Sachs annual Top 100 Hospitals study of medical and operational excellence.
Pioneering efforts
Across its 82-year history, Cleveland Clinic physicians have made their mark in medicine and patient care with a continual stream of breakthroughs, innovations and unique approaches to diagnosing and managing disease.
Cleveland Clinic prides itself on helping set the standards for treatment and care, a distinction it maintains by hiring the best and brightest in medicine and constantly challenging them to use their creativity and ingenuity to advance medical care.
Researchers at Cleveland Clinic have developed innovative approaches to:
- diagnose and manage heart disease
- restore vision
- diagnose and manage liver and breast cancer
- treat Parkinson's disease
- treat stroke
- manage heart beat disorders
- pain management
Cleveland Clinic physicians also have invented surgical tools and medical devices that make new procedures possible, shorten surgery times, minimize blood loss and improve quality of life for patients. They also have taken the lead in testing new drugs and devices, particularly in patients with heart disease, cancer and brain disorders. Their investigations helped identify genes involved in prostate cancer and heart attack.
The Group Practice Model
Cleveland Clinic is a not-for-profit group practice. The doctors on staff are salaried employees of Cleveland Clinic and are not in private practice. They pool their wisdom and expertise for the benefit of the patient and the community. Because they are salaried, doctors are not financially motivated to order unnecessary procedures and tests. Thus they are able to focus on the patient and deliver the most appropriate and best care.
